Great Gatsby

Great Gatsby: Lisa Westendorf

Bright Flight

“Bright Flight” gives a nod to the illustrative and decorative styles of the 20’s. Thin layers of paint create an optical mixing of vibrant colour in the butterfly’s body and wings. The 20’s were a time of great change and artistic activity. My hope is that this piece evokes a similar feeling of vibrancy and movement for the viewer.

I Give Up

The Surrealist movement grew out of the 1920’s. The concept of Surrealism included the idea of creating images that were not logically possible in reality. “I give up” is a Surrealist take on the concept of feeling completely frustrated and overwhelmed, which I think is particularly relevant now with the advent of COVID-19 and its impact on people in many different ways. Sometimes it would just be easier to “throw out the briefcase” as this picture shows.
