Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience by Mo Willems and Deborah Wicks La Puma

“They are a little bit rat. They are a little bit mole. They are all naked.”    Don’t let the fact that the title has the word “naked” in it or that the same word is repeated several times in the opening number fool you. This is, indeed, a children’s show. Yes, you are still at Surrey Youth Theatre and it’s safe to bring the kids in as we’re only talking about cute little naked mole rats. This production premiered at Seattle Children’s Theatre in 2018 and SYTCO is thrilled to introduce it to Canada!

“Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Rock Experience” was created by the Emmy and three time Caldecott Honor-Winning author, Mo Willems.  Willems is the delightful and humorous children’s author best known for his Elephant and Piggie book series, as well as Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and Knuffle Bunny.

Wilbur, a clothes-loving mole rat with exceptional style, navigates the pressure to be just like everyone else. With tail-shaking tunes, empowering messages of individuality, and classic Mo Willems humor, this musical is sure to rock audiences of all ages. The story follows the life of a mole who is feeling the pressure of trying to fit in with everyone around him. The play is full of life lessons and it’s not just for kids… adults will love it too!   This delightful little story of following your own bliss as long as it doesn’t hurt someone else and letting others do the same is a lesson many in our society could learn.

With music by Deborah Wicks La Puma, these mole rats start off each day with a rockin’ tune about how great it is to be naked mole rats in their underground tunnels. But one mole rat, Wilbur J. Mole Rat Jr. feels something is missing -– until the day an ordinary hat falls into his tunnel. Wilbur dares to try it on and his life changes forever! This cheeky musical exposes the truth about being yourself and wearing it well.
