What is Ulee’s Accessing the Arts Campaign?

Be a part of something special! Please join us and make your tax-deductible donation today!

Your donation in action! $100.00 can provide access for individuals and families who wouldn’t be able to access this programming:

      • 3 individual memberships or two family memberships
      • 3 people to join a Family Workshop
      • a half scholarship to an arts course
      • 5 passes to the Life Drawing or Pottery drop-ins
      • 3 people to access our Pottery Tutoring

Your contributions to Ulee’s Accessing the Arts Campaign will make a huge difference and support many individuals and families to access the arts! Since its launch in late 2022, the campaign has had a significant impact on individuals within our community. Thanks to the generous funds raised, we have been able to provide the opportunity for five individuals to access SAS Visual Arts and Pottery courses and workshops. Additionally, three memberships have been granted, further enhancing their engagement with the arts.

    Who is Semiahmoo Arts?

Established in 1974, SAS was established as the Community Arts Council of White Rock & District. In 2014 we began operating the arts wing in the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre. We support local artists and artistic organizations, sponsor events within the local community and offer programming in the performing, literary, and visual arts for children, youth and adults.

One of our main roles is community outreach and to provide opportunities for the public to enjoy and experience the arts. We provide our community with arts classes, hiring professional artists as instructors to teach art classes in, but not limited to painting/drawing, pottery and the performing and literary arts. We partner with local arts groups and businesses to nourish the Arts in our neighborhood.

    Who is Ulee Maschaykh?

Dr. Ulduz (Ulee) Maschaykh was raised in Cologne, Germany, and came to the Executive Director at SAS in 2019 with an impressive resume that included bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Bonn, and work as a postdoctoral research fellow at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. She had also served as a visiting fellow at both UBC and the University of Auckland in New Zealand and, latterly, worked with many Metro Vancouver non-profit organizations, including the Downtown Eastside Centre for the Arts, the Heritage Vancouver Society and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Ulee authored a book, The Changing Image of Affordable Housing – Design, Gentrification and Community in Canada and Europe.

Ulee served as Executive Director from June 2019 through January 2022, providing incredible leadership through the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, Ulee passed away in March 2022 during a visit to Germany with her mother. The SAS community is grieving our loss and is creating this arts access fund in her name, in support of our mandate of “Arts for Everyone”.
