Artist Statement - Linda Morris

Linda Morris is a local artist who has been painting for many years. She specializes in oil paintings, oil pastels, and acrylic painting. She loves all the bright colours of nature, and the almost spiritual nature of the painting itself. She became inspired by all forms of painting when her father passed on, and continues this wonderful form of therapy. She has continued to expand her painting skills with various classes, and also teaches the students at Cloverdale Community Centre. Linda’s art has evolved over the years, as she is becoming more abstract in her approach to the painting, “seeing it” as an extension of herself, showing her love of animals and the beautiful province that we live in.

She belongs to the Arts Council of Surrey, Langley Arts Council, Semiahmoo Arts, South Surrey, White Rock Art Society and most recently been accepted in the Federation of Canadian Artists, which has been a huge step for her as an artist.

Artist Statement - Catherine Sheppard

Drawing and painting have always been a big part of my life ever since I was in kindergarten. My teachers recognized my art ability and told me that I would become an artist one day. I spent many hours drawing, viewing books and magazines that had photos and illustrations.

My focus on art in high school allowed me to graduate with majors in Commercial Art & Photography. My parents owned a printing business which enhanced my knowledge of the production end of the business. I followed a pathway that led me through the computer desktop publishing revolution. I mastered the ever changing array of programs to marry both my artistic and technical skills.

When I was finally able to focus on my art after raising two children, I began with charcoal and pencil. I was ready to add some colour, so went into watercolour and oil painting. I was always interested in adding detail to my work and by chance found my now preferred medium in pastel painting. I love the richness of colour and the detail that I can create. I am continuing to experiment with new techniques, pastel mediums and papers.

I love to capture my own original images, to that end, I like to go out on sunny days with camera in hand and photograph my subject matter. Hoping to capture something that inspires me to recreate on paper with pastels to share with my viewer. As I have such a love of nature, I like to especially photograph birds and animals. I find it a challenge to capture the intricacies of colour, texture and form. I find great satisfaction in the hunt for interesting subject matter which takes me to many wildlife habitats, heritage parks, zoos and wildlife parks.

I belong to four art groups where I can show my art and interact with other very creative people. I have flourished in this environment with many awards and qualifications. As I have learned so much over the years I am happy to pass this knowledge on to my students and I am extremely proud of their progression.
