Winter Solstice 2021

Emma Vander Ploeg

Hello, my name is Emma Vander Ploeg and I’m a local artist just starting to dip my toes into gallery work after graduating university last spring. I grew up here in the lower mainland, sailing with my family out of crescent beach as well as adventuring through our local mountains. This is where I learned to be inspired to create, and where I continue to find my artistic inspiration into adulthood.

Sudden Snow

There’s something so wonderful about an afternoon mountain hike in the early winter. I’m not sure if it’s the stark contrast of the wet of the city to the snow-covered trees above, or if it’s the adventure that comes with racing to the end when you realize it’s getting dark and you forgot a headlamp yet again. But I do know that it’s an experience I thoroughly enjoy each time.

Afternoon Hike

I love that part of late afternoon hikes in the mountains when the sun starts to set just after 4 pm. The part when you look up to try to see how much light is left, and suddenly take in the grandeur and height of the trees around you. It feels like they’ve been lengthened by a fisheye lens but they’re not, and here you are, quietly plodding through the snow among them.
