Shadows of the Past
Description: There are few items left from my mother. She was born in 1929 on the island of Java in Indonesia, to parents of Dutch-Indonesian heritage. A handful of brooches, a hair pin, the small, smiling wooden Buddha, a filigree pendant and the supports for a shelf from a large carved mahogany piece. This piece of cyanotype fabric shows the silhouettes of these inherited pieces, almost ghost-like in their memories.

Collage of Memories
Description: My mother brought many pieces of batik when she and her family left Indonesia after World War II, to go live in The Netherlands. When I was growing up, there were batik pieces all around the house; a tablecloth here, and wall hanging there and a window covering in another room. I have created a photo collage of most of what remains. The center image is from a large batik map of Indonesia and this detail honours my mother’s birthplace on the island of Java.
