Love is in the Air

Talia McManus

Talia McManus is an abstract intuitive artist residing in Delta. Specializing in expressive acrylic paintings, Talia’s work explores the mental and emotional health journey of women, inviting them to find inner reflections, self-love, and new ways to move through thoughts and feelings.

Talia grew up with a love for drawing and painting, and she pursued those passions further through Animation studies at Emily Carr University. Her mixed-media grad film ‘Speed Signs’ was shown in several international film festivals including Melbourne and Toronto. While Talia explored other non-artistic roles professionally following graduation, her passion for visual arts never left and she displayed with the South Delta Artists’ Guild on several occasions throughout the 2010s. Talia also brought her creativity to her other passion of drumming and lead community drum circles for families and children for several years in Delta, Richmond, and New Westminster.

Now a stay-at-home mom, Talia has recommitted herself to her passion for visual art and has been part of a mentorship community lead by previous BC Artist, Ting Yuen. She has been persistently painting a new collection amongst the busyness of raising two young boys. Her upcoming collection focuses on the inner journey of women, and how to navigate their internal landscape while moving towards more love, acceptance, and community in their own lives and those around them.

Title: Faith in Love

Description: ‘Faith in Love’ is a reflection of one’s inner faith that they will make it through a given situation. This painting was started many years ago with simple layers of blue glaze and pink overtop – at the time, I did not know where to go with the piece so I left it alone for a number of years. After making my recommitment to making a new art collection this past year, I examined it and wanted to breathe new life into it, and try something bold to bring it to fruition. I layered vibrant reds and darker blues to show the love and joy I felt to reconnect to this piece after so many years. But, I wanted to keep a portion of what came before showing through, so I created a ‘window’ into that previous layer. I see this piece as a representation of how we layer up experiences in ourselves, time passes, and we layer new emotions, new sentiments, new hurts, but there is always a window to a type of innocence, a simpler beginning that we all came from. To me, this means faith in ourselves and faith in what we believe in because no matter how muddy and full our inner experiences become, we can always find a way to transport ourselves back to a simpler, less complex state through the power of faith and love.

Title: Heart Exhales

Description: This piece symbolizes the essence of love and the heart. The pink and reddish interior are an abstract representation of the heart and the life force it gives us. Can you imagine if we didn’t have a heart to guide us through our daily lives? Not only would our physical bodies cease to exist but our sense of community, of our connection to the human population as a whole would take on an entirely different existence. It is our hearts that make us human, and our hearts that guide us in who we are and what we do. Our brain will try to send us firings of what we ‘should’ do or the ‘rational’ action, as represented by the yellow streaks and blue patches but the heart will always have its definitive say even if it is quite the opposite of all other ‘logical’ thinking. With the ‘exhale’ of the heart, we often know exactly what we need to do, even if it necessarily isn’t the easiest to do. This piece explores the power of the heart and how it impacts our day-to-day lives.
