Winter Solstice 2021

Veronica Newell

I am a mixed media artist based in Surrey BC. I create colorful and expressive paintings depicting landscapes, birds and figures. I utilizes a variety of materials and tools to create my art, such as paper, fabric, acrylic paint, palette knives and stencils. Travels to Europe, Asia and Morocco have greatly influence my love of pattern, history and art. I seek to connect these memories in a decorative way to my West Coast life and surroundings.

I am an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and show my work in various art shows and galleries. In good weather during the Summer, I can be found painting outdoors and showing my work on the Artist’s Walk at White Rock Beach.

Snowflake

Winter Solstice is the perfect time to take notice of our year-round wildlife. Great Blue Herons can be seen here throughout the Winter season. This heron was painted in acrylics, with a background of collage and paint.

First Snow

This mixed media piece was created specifically for the Winter Solstice exhibit. To me, the  Winter Solstice in Surrey is experienced by the variable weather we experience here. From the occasional snowfall, the always green grass and the birds flying. With the short days of the season, it is important to get outside when we can and experience nature.  Text and patterns are visible from a base collage layer under the acrylic painting. The snowfall was created using drips of acrylic ink to create a dreamy ethereal landscape.
