Janna Kumi

Janna Kumi is a recipient of Visual Arts Research and Create grants awarded during 2019/20 and 2021/22. She received her Signature Status with the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2021.

Kumi studied physical geography at Concordia University; and then forestry at the Universities of Munich and British Columbia (UBC). After 35 years working in resource management in British Columbia, she returned to her first love – art. She attained her certificate of Fine Art Techniques from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (2009) and a BFA from UBC (2015). Since then she has had many solo and group exhibitions, including At Eye Level, Hatch Gallery, Vancouver (2018); Bark, Van Dusen Gardens, Vancouver Time and Process, Port Coquitlam (2020), at Harmony Arts, West Vancouver (2015 – 2019) and with the Federation of Canadian Artists, Vancouver since 2014.

Kumi is best known for her large-scale, intimate, colour pencil drawings of tree bark. She lives in Metro Vancouver and you can see her taking pictures of bark all over the province.
